50+ Tools? 71 Features? How Mac Notch Apps Count — and Why FavTray Is 179
Short answer: the numbers measure different things. Notchy advertises 71 features. Its comparison page says FavTray has “fifteen.” Both are true in their own units and meaningless side by side, because Notchy counts functions and we count tools. Counted Notchy’s way, FavTray 1.11.0 has 179 — the whole inventory is below, and every row links to the page that describes it.
Updated 10 September 2026. Written by FavTray’s maker. Notchy’s list is quoted from notchy.dev on that date.
The two counting conventions
Function counting. Each thing the app can do is one item. Notchy’s list includes “Caps Lock HUD”, “Zip & Unzip”, “Drive Eject”, “Keyboard Backlight”, “Automatic Updates”, “Pill on Any Mac”. That’s not cheating — it’s a complete list of what the app does, and for a free app supported by donations it’s a fair way to show the work. It just isn’t comparable to a tool count.
Tool counting. Each self-contained job is one item, however many functions it takes. Eye Rest is one tool. Inside it: a 20-20-20 timer, six presets, a Pomodoro mode, 37 body-break exercises in eight categories at three intensities, meeting detection, typing detection, screen-recording pause, office hours, an inactivity nudge, and stats with streaks. Eleven functions, one tool.
We count tools because that’s how you decide whether to install something: “do I need a break timer” — not “do I need a Caps Lock HUD.” But if you’re comparing lists, compare like with like.
FavTray, counted function by function
Mirrors the full FavTray feature list. An earlier version of this post gave the total as ≈ 121 — an addition error; the rows summed to 161. A code audit on 10 September 2026 then found 18 functions the table had missed.
Same convention as Notchy’s list: one row per thing the app does. Where a function is Pro, it says so; everything else is free.

That’s the same yardstick as “71.” We’re not going to put “179 features” on the homepage — the tool count is the honest one for deciding what to install — but if the comparison is by function, this is the function list.
What a count doesn’t tell you
Three things matter more than either number:
- Does it stay quiet when you’re busy? FavTray’s reminders (Eye Rest, Hydrate, Move, Reminders) are dropped — not queued — during meetings, screen shares and takeovers. A feature that fires during your demo is a bug with a marketing name.
- Does it cost nothing when idle? We measured: 0.3–0.5 % CPU and 179 MB with all 17 tools on. The island follows a no-perpetual-animation rule.
- Would you use the three things you came for? A long list is a menu, not a meal. Try the tools you’d open daily and ignore the rest of the count — ours included.
Both apps have a free way to check: Notchy is free; FavTray unlocks everything for 30 days with no card and no account.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many tools does FavTray have?
17 tools: Eye Rest Timer, AI Usage Tracker, Keep Alive, Window Manager, Cloud Costs, System Info, Port Kill, Menu Bar Manager, GitHub Notifications, Reminders, Meetings, AI Writer, Screenshot, Agent Sessions, Hydrate, Move, and FavShelf (the Dynamic Island). Counted function by function — the way notch apps usually advertise — that's 179.
Why does Notchy say 71 features and FavTray say 17?
Different units. Notchy counts every function as a feature: Caps Lock HUD, Zip & Unzip, Drive Eject, Keyboard Backlight are four. FavTray counts tools: Eye Rest is one tool that contains a 20-20-20 timer, six presets, Pomodoro, 37 body-break exercises, meeting detection, typing detection, office hours and stats. Neither number is wrong; they measure different things.
Is a higher feature count better?
Only if you'd use the features. A long list of small utilities is real value for some people and clutter for others. The better question is which three or four things you'd open every day — and whether the app does those well, stays light when idle, and respects your meetings.
Where can I verify FavTray's function list?
Every row in the inventory table in this post links to the feature page that describes it, and the app has a 30-day full trial with no card so you can check each one yourself.
