AI Writer

Rewrite anything,
right where you are

Select text in any Mac app and a floating toolbar appears — Polish, Format, Proofread, make it Funny, add Emoji, or Write from scratch. Powered by your own OpenAI or DeepSeek key. Nothing leaves your Mac except the request you choose to send.

Selecting text, opening the AI Writer toolbar, and replacing the selection with a polished version.
What it does

An AI rewrite is one selection away

Works In Every App

Select text anywhere — Mail, Notes, Slack, your browser, even terminals like Warp — and a floating toolbar appears at your cursor. Reads the selection over the Accessibility API, with a clipboard fallback for apps that don't expose it.

Six AI Actions

Polish for clarity, Format for structure, Proofread for grammar only, Make it Funny for a witty rewrite, Add Emoji to liven it up, or Write Anything from a topic. Each is a tuned prompt — not a generic chatbot.

Streams, Then You Decide

The result streams in live so you see it forming, then you choose: Replace the selection, Insert below it, Copy, Regenerate, or Discard. Nothing is changed until you say so.

Bring Your Own Key

Point it at OpenAI, DeepSeek, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint (Groq, Together, a local model). Your key, your model, your bill — pick the provider and model in Settings.

Your Key Stays Local

The API key lives in your macOS Keychain (or an environment variable). No FavTray account, no proxy, no middleman — requests go straight from your Mac to your provider.

Safe By Design

Long or empty selections are rejected before any request. Selected text is sandboxed against prompt injection, password fields are skipped, and your clipboard is snapshotted and restored around every action.

FAQ

Questions

Which AI models can I use?

Any OpenAI-compatible chat endpoint. FavTray ships presets for OpenAI (gpt-4o-mini) and DeepSeek (deepseek-chat), plus a Custom option where you set the base URL and model — so Groq, Together, OpenRouter, or a local Ollama server all work. You bring the key.

Does my text or API key go to FavTray's servers?

Never. FavTray has no servers in this loop. Your API key is stored in the macOS Keychain (or read from an environment variable) and requests go directly from your Mac to the provider you chose. We never see your text or your key.

How do I trigger the toolbar?

Just select text with the mouse in any app — drag across it or double-click a word — and the toolbar appears at your cursor. Press Esc or click away to dismiss it. There's a minimum selection length so it never flashes on accidental clicks.

Will Replace work in apps like WhatsApp or a terminal?

Yes for editable fields — write-back uses the clipboard and ⌘V, then restores your original clipboard. In a terminal, scrollback isn't editable, so Replace pastes at the prompt; Copy and Insert still work everywhere.

Is AI Writer free?

It's a Pro-tier feature, included with the Personal plan (₹49/month) and the Lifetime license (₹2499), and fully available during the 30-day trial. You also need your own provider API key — usage is billed by your provider, not by FavTray.

Does it need any permissions?

It needs macOS Accessibility permission to read your selection and type the result back — the same permission the Window Manager uses. Grant it once in System Settings; everything stays on your Mac.
