GitHub PRs and CI in the Mac Menu Bar: 7 Apps

By FavTray ·

Written by the team behind FavTray, a Mac developer dashboard for the menu bar. We check every app we cover against its own site, docs or a hands-on test, and each post says which.

Short answer: the best Mac menu bar apps for GitHub pull requests and CI depend on the job. For a list of your PRs with CI badges, GitBar is free and PullBar Pro is free with a $1.99 unlock. Gitify (free, open source) is the pick for GitHub notifications. CCMenu shows GitHub Actions builds, RepoBar suits maintainers of many repos, and Trailer is the power-user tracker. FavTray puts a GitHub dashboard next to your AI limits and dev servers, free for 2 repos.

Checked 26 September 2026: prices, latest versions and macOS requirements come from each app’s App Store listing, website or GitHub repository. We haven’t benchmarked them side by side. FavTray is our app; it’s listed last.

1. Gitify: the best free app for GitHub notifications

Gitify puts your Git notifications in the menu bar and lets you open, mark read, mark done or unsubscribe without visiting github.com. Version 7.8.0 came out on 6 September 2026.

  • Strengths: it’s the only one here that handles several forges (GitHub Cloud and Enterprise, GitLab, Bitbucket Cloud, Gitea, Forgejo, Codeberg), and it runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. brew install --cask gitify installs it.
  • Catch: it’s a notifications inbox, not a PR list. CI results reach you only as the notifications GitHub sends. It’s built on Electron, so it’s heavier than the native apps below.

2. PullBar Pro: a PR list with check runs

PullBar Pro (version 2.4, 20 September 2026) shows PRs that need your review, PRs you created and PRs assigned to you, with approvals, change requests and comments.

  • Strengths: build status per PR from Check Runs or Commit Statuses, with a link to each workflow step. Custom search queries per tab, keyboard shortcuts and GitHub Enterprise support.
  • Catch: GitHub only, and the tabs need a $1.99 in-app purchase. The original pullBar is open source; its App Store build was last updated in September 2025, PullBar Pro in September 2026.

3. GitBar: pull requests from GitHub, GitLab and Azure DevOps

GitBar 2.0 (free on the Mac App Store, version 2.0.1 from April 2026) shows each PR as a card with pipeline state, approvals, merge conflicts and draft status, and adds GitHub issues.

  • Strengths: the only PR list here that also covers GitLab and Azure DevOps. A “Relevant” tab and filters cut the noise, and a compact view fits one PR per line.
  • Catch: closed source, and the last update was in April.

4. Trailer: PRs and issues for power users

Trailer has tracked GitHub pull requests and issues for over a decade. Version 1.9.0 (29 August 2026) rebuilt the menu bar item for macOS 26 and now needs macOS 15.6 or later.

  • Strengths: it lists everything in the repositories you watch, with per-repo display rules, optional labels and CI status, and GitHub Enterprise support. There’s also a CLI, and an iOS app that this release didn’t update.
  • Catch: it lists every watched repo by default, so on a big account you’ll tune per-repo settings to keep it quiet, and first syncs take a while.

5. RepoBar: a dashboard for maintainers

RepoBar (version 0.9.3, 20 September 2026) is built for people who maintain many repositories. The menu shows issue and PR counts, CI state, releases, activity and your API rate limit; each repo opens a submenu with its issues, PRs, CI runs, branches and commits.

  • Strengths: it also shows local checkout state (branch, dirty files, ahead/behind, worktrees) and can fast-forward clean repos. brew install --cask repobar.
  • Catch: repo-centric rather than “my PRs”, and it needs macOS 15.

6. CCMenu: CI builds only, including GitHub Actions

CCMenu is the long-running open-source build monitor, free on the Mac App Store (version 28.0). Add GitHub Actions workflows by owner and repository, or any CI server that publishes a CCTray feed.

  • Strengths: focused, native, and it works beyond GitHub. The icon shows at a glance when a build breaks.
  • Catch: no pull requests, reviews or issues. It shows builds, nothing else.

7. FavTray: a GitHub dashboard next to the rest of your dev tools

Disclosure: this is our app. FavTray is a Mac menu bar app for developers, and its GitHub screen has six tabs: Dashboard, Inbox, My PRs, Watching, On disk and Manage.

  • Today view per repo: commits, branches, unpushed work, PRs opened, merged and reviewed, reviews waiting on you, and CI on your latest pushes, for Today, Yesterday or This week.
  • Your PRs: CI state, whether they can merge, and unresolved review threads.
  • Two halves, one of them token-free. A read-only git scanner reads your local checkouts with no token and no network (it adds --no-optional-locks and refuses any command that could write). The GitHub half batches your watched repos into one GraphQL query (a second only past 39 repos), at most every 5 minutes and only while the Dashboard or the menu bar cockpit is on screen; the Inbox checks every 15 minutes by default.
  • No new token to mint. It can reuse the gh CLI or your git credential helper, read-only, or a token you paste. You can switch between the accounts it finds, and GitHub Enterprise Server works too.
  • Next to everything else: the same app shows Claude and Codex limits and localhost ports and Docker, and the free developer cockpit in the menu bar flags red CI and reviews that have waited a day or more alongside them.

Catch: GitHub only, PR-focused (no issue tracking), and it can’t re-run CI. Every tab is free for 2 watched repos; FavTray Pro, a one-time $4.99 Lifetime license, watches every repo, and every install gets Pro free for 7 days.

How do you choose?

  • You live in notifications, or use GitLab/Bitbucket too: Gitify.
  • You want “my PRs and their checks” at a glance: PullBar Pro, or GitBar if you also use GitLab or Azure DevOps.
  • You only care whether the build is green: CCMenu.
  • You maintain lots of repos: RepoBar.
  • You track PRs and issues across many watched repos: Trailer.
  • You’d rather have one app for GitHub, AI limits and dev servers: FavTray. Our roundup of AI usage tracking tools covers the AI-limits side.

When is GitHub’s own tooling enough?

A menu bar app earns its place when you check PRs many times a day. If you don’t, these may be all you need:

  • GitHub CLI: gh pr status summarises your relevant PRs, including CI checks and reviews, and gh run watch follows a workflow run until it completes.
  • GitHub Mobile pushes review requests, direct mentions and assignments to your phone. CI results aren’t among its push notification types.
  • GitHub’s email notifications, or the GitHub app for Slack, suit teams that already triage there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free app for GitHub pull requests in the Mac menu bar?

For a list of your PRs with CI badges, GitBar is free on the Mac App Store, and PullBar Pro is free with a $1.99 in-app unlock for its tabs. Gitify is the best free choice if you want GitHub notifications, and it also covers GitLab, Bitbucket and Gitea. RepoBar suits maintainers who watch many repositories.

How do I see GitHub Actions status in the Mac menu bar?

CCMenu is a free, open-source Mac App Store app that shows GitHub Actions workflows by owner and repository, plus any CI server with a CCTray feed. PullBar Pro, GitBar, RepoBar and FavTray also show the CI state of each pull request.

Is there a Mac menu bar app for GitLab or Azure DevOps pull requests?

Yes. GitBar handles pull requests from GitHub, GitLab and Azure DevOps. Gitify shows notifications from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket Cloud, Gitea, Forgejo and Codeberg. The other apps in this list are GitHub only.

Do GitHub menu bar apps need a personal access token?

Most ask you to sign in with GitHub or paste a personal access token. FavTray can instead reuse the gh CLI or git credential helper already on your Mac, read-only, and its local git view needs no token or network at all.

Is FavTray's GitHub dashboard free?

Yes, for 2 repositories. Every screen, including the Today dashboard, My PRs and the local git view, opens on the free plan, which watches 2 repos. FavTray Pro, a one-time $4.99 Lifetime license, watches every repo, and each install gets Pro free for 7 days.
